This holiday season, you have an opportunity to help a child with an incarcerated mother.
Two groups, Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration and Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Moms, have set up an Amazon gift registry for the kids of women incarcerated at Logan Prison in Illinois. Most toys on the registry are less than $15, with some as low as $5.
Even though it’s a small purchase, it can mean a lot to the children who are separated from their mothers. From the registry organizers:
It is so important to all moms to be able to give a gift to their children during the holidays. This program will allow mothers at Logan Prison in IL to choose a gift that YOU donated, and surprise their child/children. Please help us make this a special holiday season for kids and moms who are experiencing the pain of separation, but who work so hard to maintain that critical bond throughout the year.
Mass incarceration in this country is increasingly affecting women, especially women of color. From 1977-2011, the number of women in prisons grew by roughly 900%. Many are incarcerated for non-violent drug crimes, and women of color are disproportionately targeted for drug arrests. Drug Policy Alliance notes:
“Even though black women are no more likely than white women to use illicit drugs during pregnancy, they are far more likely to be reported to child welfare services for drug use.”
So, if you have a spare $5, or $15, consider purchasing a small gift from this gift registry, to help the child of an incarcerated mother.
