Six years ago, Colorado started a new program offering free birth control to any and everyone who wanted it. While religious conservatives have been pushing abstinence-only programs for decades, this was a bold new approach. And despite the protestations of many on the right side of the aisle, it’s working.
According to a study published in October 2014, unintended pregnancies dropped in the state by 40 percent from 2009-2013, and abortion fell by 42 percent over the same period. The program also saved the state millions in public health coverage for unintended pregnancies.
This is open and shut; free birth control works …and what’s not to love about it? Free birth control for all lowers the bad stuff (unintended pregnancies) and saves money (health coverage for said unintended pregnancies).
It’s time the whole country takes a cue with what is actually working in Colorado; free birth control for all.
