I’ll say this for Representative Dan Lipinski, from Illinois’ 3rd District: his voting record is pretty consistent.
Dan Lipinski voted against the DREAM Act, and against the ACA.
He opposes a $15 living wage for working Americans.
He opposes abortion even in the case of rape and incest, voted for a 20-week abortion ban, and has a 100% rating from the National Right to Life committee.
He is also the only Democrat candidate ever to receive a campaign contribution from the president of the virulently anti-choice March for Life.
He opposed same-sex marriage, and now that it’s legal, has co-sponsored a law which would allow people to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals.
His beliefs are clear. But on paper, his party affiliation is anything but: Dan Lipinski is a Democrat.
He has served in Congress as a Democrat, and now he’s running for re-election as a Democrat. But no matter what he says, Dan Lipinski is not a Democrat. Not because he failed a single Democratic litmus test, but because he has failed all of the Democratic litmus tests.
If my goldfish were a dog, he’d be my running buddy. And if a Democrat were a Republican, he’d be Dan Lipinski.
It’s time for him to go.
Lipinski “earned” his seat in 2005, when his dear old daddy retired and persuaded party leaders to give Danny the spot. In the years following his nepotistic rise to power, Lipinski used his dad’s ties to the Chicago machine to shield himself from accountability for a voting record that more closely resembles an Alabama Republican than an Illinois Democrat.
That’s about to change.
Marie Newman, a born-and-raised Illinoians, successful small businesswoman, human rights advocate, and progressive rising star is taking him on in the primary. She can win. And if she wins, we all win.
In this suburban Chicago district, Hillary Clinton beat Trump by 15 points in the general election, and Bernie Sanders beat Hillary by 8 points in the primary. The only Republican bothering to run is an unapologetic, Holocaust denying neo-Nazi.
The Illinois primary is on March 20. That means we have four weeks to make sure we elect a real Democrat, instead of a Republican pretending to be a Democrat, who’s been riding his daddy’s coattails for a decade while voting against everything real Democrats care about.
